The coastal area of Danga-Pendas is now under the rapid development of Danga Bay and Iskandar Development Region (IDR) which has led to changes in land use types along this area. These changes in land use will reduce the water quality of rivers, estuaries and coastal water directly.
Since Danga Bay land reclamation project started in 2000, at least 70% of the mangrove forest has been destroyed. Due to the reclamation project, the aquatic life especially the caged fish were found dead. This is due to the sediment from the reclamation process had polluted the water. The decreased in water quality can severely affect the aquatic lives living in the river.

On the other hand, water pollution caused by reclamation disrupts the natural food chain. The pollutants such as lead and cadmium are eaten by small animals are then consumed by fish. The food chain will continues to be disrupted at all next levels until it reaches to human. People will easily get diseases like hepatitis by eating the poisoned seafood. Most of the poor nations, citizen easily get infected by cholera as a result of poor drinking water treatment.
In the design the education center can be categorized into two categories. Both formal and informal education system are introduced to create awareness to different users such as locals, visitors and students on the importance of water. At the same time, the architecture will showcase stormwater management as part of the education purposes. This is because in the highly urbanized area has led to high pollutants enter surface waters via runoff without undergoing treatment, which actually has given a significant impact from a basin wide perspective.
Therefore, appropriate wetland system, storm water garden and green roof have become part of the design criteria that is considered in the proposal to become a powerful tool to raise the awareness on the importance of water in relation to our health, environment and ecosystem.
