In the contemporary world inundated with increasingly challenging socio-cultural phenomena, there are many issues that complicate the typical convention of Home: radical changes to traditional family structures and values; economy-driven mass (im)migrations that dynamically shift the urban vs. rural demographics and trigger housing crises; extreme urban density that induces blurred boundaries between private homes and public spaces; war-torn ethnic populations that are entirely displaced from homeland and implanted in foreign soils; human relationships that are more and more digitally connected yet more and more geographically distant; the new nomadic lifestyle that finds home wherever wireless connection is; homes and settlements world over that are in need of resettlement to evade natural disasters and effects of climate change. And this is not all.
Adaptive Reuse As A Strategy To Preserve And Revitalize The Collective Memory Palimpsest as Metaphor Background of the Problem
As time change, the need for various type of spaces diminishes. These buildings, whose function is no longer required, become subjects of abandonment and most likely to be forgotten and demolished despite they hold a very significant historical and cultural values. Odeon cinema in Dang Wangi, KL is one of the building facing the issue. According to Mark Crinson, urban memory can be an anthropomorphism, in a sense that the city has a memory that remembers through its buildings. Also, preservation of heritage building is related to the preservation of memories in the human mind and can serve as a preservation of a nation’s urban identity. Hence, by adaptive reuse old, unoccupied building is sustainable at the most fundamental level, and it also helps preserve the urban context while adding richness and vitality. This reusing of an unoccupied building is an innovation answers that maintains the character of the building while not compromising on its functionality and integrity, yet the collective memories of the Kuala Lumpur city can be preserved and revitalized. Design Question The proposal critics the original proposal which is to demolish the whole structure and redevelop into a mixed-use development of hotel, office and retails without considered the social approach for long term benefits. So, is this really what a society need in representing Malaysian identity and creating resilient nation?
New Chinese Opera Park for Tiong Nam Neighbourhood Rejuvenating Tiong Nam Neighbourhoods through Public Space Public space had long been the important entertainment venue and cultural nodes for Chinese opera during major Chinese festivals, in both urban and rural areas. Recently, this traditional art form has suffered from a drastic decline in popularity. In addition, the current audience has been limited to the elder generation, especially in Tiong Nam neighbourhood. Urban park has been known as the catalysts to revitalise neighbourhoods and communities. It is also a place where people from different socio-cultural background meet. Gradually, it becomes a melting pot to showcase the diversity of different culture and identity. Hence, this project will examine on the architectural integration of urban park and theatre which provide a common ground for local residents to gather and interact with one another around the Tiong Nam Neighbourhood. It is an open space, a social place for local residents and neighbourhood to enjoy the performances and get together. By locating a theatre in an urban park has the advantage of large flow of human activity. People always engage with one another in public activities. During the morning, elderlies came to do their morning exercises. Sometimes the park is filled with groups of people dancing or doing some aerobic exercies. In another way they are performing on a ‘stage’ in public because they enjoy the moment. Previously the space below the elevated LRT trail is underutilized. In the master plan, we intended to make the space below the elevated LRT trail become a potential linkage from a LRT station to another. This can promote walkability among the Tiong Nam neighborhood. With the existing elevated structure itself, it is the best shelter for public to walk beneath it. Meanwhile, the pathway leads the public to explore the Tiong Nam settlement.
The coastal area of Danga-Pendas is now under the rapid development of Danga Bay and Iskandar Development Region (IDR) which has led to changes in land use types along this area. These changes in land use will reduce the water quality of rivers, estuaries and coastal water directly. Since Danga Bay land reclamation project started in 2000, at least 70% of the mangrove forest has been destroyed. Due to the reclamation project, the aquatic life especially the caged fish were found dead. This is due to the sediment from the reclamation process had polluted the water. The decreased in water quality can severely affect the aquatic lives living in the river. On the other hand, water pollution caused by reclamation disrupts the natural food chain. The pollutants such as lead and cadmium are eaten by small animals are then consumed by fish. The food chain will continues to be disrupted at all next levels until it reaches to human. People will easily get diseases like hepatitis by eating the poisoned seafood. Most of the poor nations, citizen easily get infected by cholera as a result of poor drinking water treatment. In the design the education center can be categorized into two categories. Both formal and informal education system are introduced to create awareness to different users such as locals, visitors and students on the importance of water. At the same time, the architecture will showcase stormwater management as part of the education purposes. This is because in the highly urbanized area has led to high pollutants enter surface waters via runoff without undergoing treatment, which actually has given a significant impact from a basin wide perspective.
Therefore, appropriate wetland system, storm water garden and green roof have become part of the design criteria that is considered in the proposal to become a powerful tool to raise the awareness on the importance of water in relation to our health, environment and ecosystem.

Besides, behind every pieces of the board is filled will all the wishes from students. Meanwhile, this messages will then spread to everyone through the social media.
Introduction: Kuala Lumpur (KL) has seen rapid economic growth in recent years and this has indirectly resulted in the increase of the cost of living in the city. To some KL urbanites who are earning meagre income and irregular income, it has become increasingly challenging even to rent a space to call a night and rest after a day’s work or activity. Many end up on the streets, living under bridges and public spaces. Their daily needs, are sometimes provided, subsidised and assisted by the DBKL and several caring Non-Governmental Organisations, but these on-going assistance currently seemed not well structured or organised. DBKL has been providing temporary shelters in the city, but will soon not be sufficient as the number of homeless is on the rise. Various ‘Soup Kitchens’ can only do so much in providing food and other daily needs as they are merely charitable organisation that operates solely from donations and volunteers. Housing the homeless is not about creating permanent homes for the less fortunate. It is more of creating a conducive transient shelter that could provide the much needed communal temporary relief for the homeless. The design of these temporary shelters should not compromise on the quality of the product or construction techniques. Instead, it should provide good creature comfort, low construction work force requirement to construct, easy and low maintenance and good usage of sustainable building material, environmentally friendly and low energy, durable and capable of lasting. It should definitely test new boundaries of architectural design. The objective of this ideas competition is also to promote the Malaysian architect fraternity ability in designing for social needs and dispel the general public notion that architects only serve the elites. Mission Statement: An international open ideas competition for architects and students is initiated to remember and honor the victims of the MH17 tragedy. This man-made tragedy has influenced thousands of lives in direct or indirect manner across the entire world. Most of all this tragedy has affected the Netherlands - the Dutch nation that lost 193 souls in this catastophe. Therefore Amsterdam, the departure point of this one way flight, was selected as a location for the MH17 Memorial. MATTERBETTER has proposed to design an artificial island in the IJmeer in Amsterdam as a foundation for the MH17 Memorial. We believe that the memorial has to be for everyone - the place for the people who are directly connected to the tragedy and for the population of the world in general. Because of its location the memorial has to be addressed to a broader public, as it will be visited by various groups of people. It should form a new public space - the place for remembrance, ceremonies, recreation, private gatherings and should become a vital point of the Amsterdam cultural infrastructure. MH17 Memorial has to be free from the political overtone and should not directly express the tragedy in a type of a monologue - it should allow individuals to experience through the space and form their own memories and emotions. Human presence is vital. The Memorial has to become an inviting place open for physical interaction, the place that honors remembrances, respect for life and a preservation of peace. It was decided that the MH17 Memorial site will accomodate a landscape park in addition to its main purpose in order to become a green axis that will connect the Old Center and the North of Amsterdam and strengthen the location that is reclaimed from the water - symbolizing traditional collaboration of the Dutch people with the nature. The memorial is portrayed as a monumental figure, a symbol of defiance and human determination towards the flight tragedy that has struck the Dutch nation and the world as a whole. The memorial aims to harness the power of journey and discovery to create a strong immersive experiences when one walks through it. In regards to creating such spaces, it is hope that the memorial could evoke a sense of being overwhelmed at first, but when one moves from one end to another, the feeling is gradually being replaced with peace and tranquility and finally, HOPE. Sustainable Living Pavilion is to promote, showcase and host events for sustainable living in every imaginable aspects. i.e. ; the way we live, travel and consume food. You can choose several or focus on one aspect of sustainable living. The pavilion must provide learning experiences for the public with regards to several aspects of sustainable living way of life or a focused one. Vermi-pavilion showcases our consumption of food as a visual & material experience, producing compost as a useful product. One that is returned back to the source of the food and given to the public as a teaching aid & meaningful souvenir. By using the plastic bottle as ceiling decoration can maximize the interior lighting by diffusing the direct sunlight into the spaces. Other than that, the non-biodegradable plastic material can also use as planting container.

The aim of the project is to develop a broadly informed framework within which to study architecture. The project encourages a free thinking stance from the students and asks that they approach their work as an open-ended challenge. Regeneration of an existing fabric is always a challenge and should be seen as craft. We have to test different positions of our proposals and how we think about each individual project, in relation to culture, economics, politics, construction and poetry. perspective
When the river tide is lower, fisherman can hang his net for drying, cleaning or repairing. The sculpture has a horizontal surface for the net to lay on. Fisherman can easily do the folding and packing of his net. Replicating the passage of time, the proposed design is derived from the timeline of Kuala Sepetang; the rise and fall of Kuala Sepetang, its glory and triumph, and how it fell and fades. Every incident and event, every time lapse combine to form Kuala Sepetang of today. Inspired by that, the design of every single piece of the timber panel, each plays their roles as they combine, forming a whole, to serve the villagers of Kuala Sepetang by providing convenience, entertainment, and experience. The bio-light is a conceptual idea that uses various biological technologies to create ambient light effects. River water in Kuala Sepetang contains human organic waste which will be a source of methane for the bacteria to cultivate it. Kids living in Kuala Sepetang have a happy and playful lifestyle. This sculpture provide a new playing ground for them to jump and play. Climbing, hanging, sliding, jumping, and any other possible action the children can creatively use it as a fun sculpture. The site is a boat stop. While waiting there, the passengers will require a sit. Besides allow net cleaning utilities, the design is anthropometry for sitting. Various sitting position is possible for adults, and even children. Info:
